The foreman's wife is very unlike his mother. She is a devout Baptist and is often elected to church conventions held in other parts of the country.

She is the one person on the plantation before whom the foreman is meek. She often chides him for having sin and declares that unless he changes his ways he is as sure for hell as a martin for its gourd (35).
