She [the foreman's mother] gave up "regular" work many years ago when the plantation mistress whom she served as a personal maid passed away.
Instead of living with her son, she lives in her own home several miles from the plantation Big House. Geraniums bloom in bright rows on sunny shelves at the edge of her tiny front piazza, and all summer long her yard is gay with old-fashioned blossoms. Vegetables thrive in her garden, her cow is trained to give milk without calving and the eggs laid by her fowls are prized for "seed."
She is gentle and lady-like, but her honesty and frankness are steadfast as her kindness and her tongue is quick to reprove those who displease her (32).
